As Australians, we value looking after each other so highly, we have built one of the most incredible healthcare systems in the world, which includes the NDIS which is something we should all be so proud of.
No system is perfect and every system has flaws - yet it’s the superpower we don’t realise we possess until we go somewhere without it.
Looking after the most vulnerable in our community makes us all better, so when the NDIS took sex work off its scope of provision - more than a few eyebrows were raised.
It was absolutely not a standard offering, required significant justification by the participant’s medical professionals and support coordinator, and in the very rare occasion that it was approved, was tightly regulated and focused on the mental and physical health benefits.
So when I had the chance to ask Antonia Murphy her thoughts on the importance of touch and intimacy for all people, including those with disabilities, she didn’t hold back. Antonia is the owner and madam at an ethical brothel in NZ, and was such an insightful guest on the pod this week. Her approach to the sex industry has always centred on consent, safety, and professionalism, challenging stereotypes while highlighting society’s complex relationship with intimacy and pleasure.
